blog: I'm Just Saying
Springing from the womb of an English mother and sired by a German father, Pam Stone, inheriting the freakish height of European ancestry, and being raised in the rural south, had no option in life except to become a stand-up comic. "Plus," she laments, "I have no marketable skills." In 1985, after beginning a career at The Punchline Comedy Club in Atlanta, Pam, "blissfully ignorant," drove across country to make her move to Los Angeles, CA. Things began to happen quickly: in one year, she was writing for a game show and performing studio audience warm-up for sit-coms, and three years later found herself cast in the role of basketball coach "Judy Watkins" in the hit ABC series "Coach," starring Craig T Nelson and Jerry Van Dyke. "Everything that has happened to me has been a fluke." she says. "Two of the shows producers just happened to be in a comedy club in which I was performing in Pasadena. They had come to see another female comic who had a bad night and I just happened to be really 'on'. The producers came to see me back stage and six months later called me in for the part." She remained as a recurring character for seven seasons until the show went off the air in 1998. "An incredible experience." she sighs. "It opened so many doors for me."
It certainly did! What followed were numerous appearances on 'The Tonight Show,'Arsenio Hall,' 'Oprah,' 'Joan Rivers,' as well as three Showtime Cable Specials and hosting various prime-time specials for ABC. She received five nominations for The American Comedy Awards. "I felt like Susan Lucci! I finally won the damned thing in 1992- I practically tackled George Carlin when he announced my name." Being true to her feelings, she thanked, in order, her agents and manager, her mother, her horse, and her boyfriend. Was long-time partner, Paul, jealous? "Hell, no," he admits, knowing Pam's life-long passion for equines, "I was just glad to be included!" Riding and competing in the equestrian sport of dressage keeps Pam's feet on the ground- usually in manure. "I'm very hands-on in the care of my horses." she says. "Besides, it costs too much to hire people!" Working up the levels and having the opportunity to train for over nine years with members of the United States Equestrian Team in California, Pam has earned the United States Dressage Federation Bronze and Silver Medals as well as respectable finishes in Regional Finals. She is currently training her Dutch Warmblood, Jeltsin, at the FEI Level. It was too many earthquakes, fires, and riots that lead Pam and Paul to make the bold move back to the Southeast in 2000 to a farm Pam had purchased in 1993. "It was everything I'd dreamed of as a kid," she explains."Rural, modest, and sprawling. You can walk around the place naked- which explains why UPS refuses to deliver here, anymore." Situated in the foothills of South Carolina, it was here at the farm where Pam received a most surprising phonecall from LINK syndicator, Tony Garcia, inquiring whether or not she'd like to host her own talk show. "Sure, I said, but I don't see myself making that commute to Charlotte each day." Pam explained. "No problem!" said Tony. "With a DSL line, you can do it from your farm." The rest is history. |
